Internship – Advocacy for deforestation-free cocoa


Intern for WWF Belgium within the ‘Policy and Business Engagement team’, focusing on advocacy for sustainable consumption.

Objectives of the internship

WWF wants to offer the opportunity to a trainee with a background in sustainable development, environment sciences, agronomy, ecology and with a keen interest on topics linked to responsible agriculture, sustainable trade and WWF’s work and mission. We offer an internship where you will work on the impact of Belgian consumption on deforestation and forest degradation, via advocacy work towards decision-makers, the private sector and consumers. The internship will focus on the commodity cocoa, but the intern will be drawn to support the wider work on responsible sourcing and the Belgian consumption footprint. The forest policy officer at WWF, will supervise the intern.

Main tasks

WWF-Belgium has joined the "Beyond Chocolate" partnership aiming for a sustainable chocolate supply by 2030 in Belgium. In order to best contribute to achieving the objectives of the partnership, WWF-Belgium will develop its knowledge and tools for more sustainability in cocoa value chains with the help of the trainee. The trainee will be entrusted with several activities that she/he will conduct under the guidance of WWF’s forest policy officer. Additionally, the intern will also support the broader advocacy work of WWF-Belgium around responsible sourcing and deforestation-free commodities.

Main activities will include:

  • Literature review on different themes related to cocoa production, its impact on biodiversity and deforestation, as well as solutions (efficiency of certification standards, agroforestry); expert consultation, creation of a resource library.
  • Overview and assessment of tools to achieve more sustainable value chains (corporate commitments, certifications, etc.): support external consultation of WWF analyses, preparing a publication (writing text, coordinating translation and layout), and disseminating results on different platforms.
  • Support for advocacy work on the Belgian consumer footprint and zero-deforestation value chains: Preparation of position papers, assistance in the organization of meetings / events, communication to stakeholders and the public (social media, blog) , coordination with other Belgian NGOs.


• Masters in a field related to the internship theme: ecology, agronomy, forestry, sustainable development, environmental sciences.
• Language skills

o Proficiency in oral and written English because of work in an international context. Good writing skills in English (reports to be done in English, proof will be requested).

o Oral and written command of either French or Dutch.

• Good analytical skills.
• Clear communication and good writing skills.
• Be able to work with the Microsoft Office package.
• Able to quickly become familiar with new topics and be reactive.

We offer:

  • A full-time temporary contract in the conditions of CIP/BIO.
  • The internship is available for up to 6 months, starting July/August according to availability of the right candidate.
